PNS: Tannery owners of the capital’s Hazaribagh area have filed a petition with the High Court seeking time until the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha to fully relocate their tanneries.

The petition was filed with the HC on last Thursday by Bangladesh Tanners Association and Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods Exporters Association.

On Tuesday, a two-member bench comprising Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and Justice Md Salim deferred the hearing on the petition for Wednesday.

Barristers Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury along with Barrister Upoma Bishwas and Swapnil Bhattacharya argued for the tannery owners while deputy attorney general Kazi Zinat Haque represented the state and Fida M Kamal and Syeda Rizwana Hasan of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) stood for the writ petitioner.

Earlier, on March 6, the High Court ordered the authorities concerned to take steps to close down 154 Hazaribagh tanneries immediately.

The court had also ordered disconnecting electricity, gas lines and water supply to the tanneries.
