2 killed in Gazipur factory explosion

PNS Desk: Two workers have died in heat chamber explosion at a national fan factory in Tongi, Gazipur.

Two workers, Saiful Islam, 18 and Shamsul Haque, 20, were killed in the accident, which occurred around 11:45am in the BSCIC industrial area on Monday. At least 20 others have also been injured.

Factory worker Rahim said: "I came to work at the regular time. At around 11:45am, the factory heat chamber suddenly exploded, burning at least 15-20 workers. Two bodies have been recovered from the wreckage."

Kamal Hossain, officer in-charge (OC) of Tongi East police station, said two dead bodies have been recovered from the scene where the accident occurred.

Six of the injured have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), while the rest are undergoing treatment at the Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master Hospital.

"The death count might increase," the OC said.

Ashiqur Rahman, station officer of Tongi fire service, said the explosion occurred in the heat chamber, situated on the third floor of the three-storey national fan factory.

"After working for two hours, two units of the fire services managed to get the fire under control," he said.

Medical officer of Tongi Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master Hospital also confirmed the incident.

A five-member enquiry team has been created by the district administration to investigate the causes behind the explosion in the national fan factory.

The team, led by Mashiur Rahman, the district magistrate, is expected to hand over their investigation within seven working days.

On the other hand, the district administration has promised to provide a compensation of Tk20,000 to each of the deceased worker's family, said Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur Dr Dewan Md Humayun Kabir.
